Attention, Democracy-loving Helldivers! Sony Interactive Entertainment, publisher of the smash-hit cooperative shooter Helldivers 2, recently announced a change to the PC version of the game.
Starting next week, PC players will be required to link their Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to continue battling the alien menace. While the option to link accounts was always intended, a grace period due to "technical issues" at launch allowed PC players to dive into the action without a PSN connection.
Why the Link Up?
Sony emphasizes that account linking plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and secure online environment, just like on PlayStation consoles. This allows them to utilize established moderation tools for actions like banning griefers and abusers, with the added benefit of an appeals process for those who believe they've been unfairly sanctioned.
Timeline for the Uplink
The mandatory PSN account requirement kicks in for new players on May 6th, 2024. Existing players will see the login prompt starting on May 30th, with a deadline to link their accounts by June 4th. Thankfully, creating a PSN account is free and straightforward.
PC Backlash?
It's no secret that PC gamers often resist mandatory account linking. This move by Sony could potentially dampen the game's momentum, especially considering Helldivers 2's current reign as the top-selling title of the year according to Circana data.
The Onslaught Continues
While the PSN account requirement might raise some eyebrows, the Helldivers universe continues to expand. Arrowhead Studios, the game's developer, recently announced the upcoming "Polar Patriots" Premium Warband, dropping on May 9th. This DLC pack brings a fresh arsenal of weapons, armor, capes, and emotes to further customize your democratic crusades.
